Golden Visa: Frequently Asked Questions

There are several ways one can apply for a Golden Visa, such as buying a home, or an investment in financial assets or in a business project in Spain. However, although there are many ways to access this type of authorization, the reality is that most of the time Residence Authorizations as Investors are made to invest in a property in Spain. Many doubts arise when talking about the Golden Visa, below we will solve some of the most common questions.


How much money do I need to invest in Spain to obtain a Golden Visa?

To apply for a Residence Authorization as an Investor in Spain, it is necessary to invest 500,000 euros in a home. This amount is the one that has been set to access a Golden Visa or Residence Authorization as an Investor in Spain.


Should it be a house of 500,000 euros or several houses that add up to that amount?

In this case, you can access a Golden Visa whether you buy a single home for a value equal to or greater than 500,000 euros or if you buy several homes or properties for that amount.


I have a home that I bought in 2021. Can I apply for a Golden Visa or Residence Authorization as an Investor?

No. In this case, you can only access a Investor Visa if you buy a home after the Entrepreneurs Law has gone into effect. This law entered on September 28th, 2013, that is, the day after its publication in the Official State Gazette.


Where do I have to apply for a Golden Visa?

The application must be submitted to the Large Companies and Strategic Groups Unit (UGE-CE). For this type of request, the competent body is UGE and not the Immigration offices.


Who can apply for a Golden Visa or Residence Authorization as an Investor?

The application can be submitted by the interested party or their accredited legal representative.



What family members can I reunite with the Golden Visa?

Family members that can be reunited are:

  • Spouse or domestic partner

  • Minor or adult children who are financially dependent on the holder of the Residence


How long is the Residence Authorization as an Investor or Golden Visa?

This visa lasts for two years. Once the residence card expires, the renewal must be requested from the Large Companies and Strategic Groups Unit (UGE-CE).


I have sold my house. Can I renew the Residence Authorization as an Investor?

If the house is sold, it is not possible to renew the residence card. The main requirement to renew is to remain the owner of the property or properties through which the Golden Visa was acquired.


Can I work with the Residency Authorization as an Investor or Golden Visa?

Yes. Both the holder of the authorization and his or her family members can work without any problem in Spain.

In addition, this card allows for employment and self-employment. Therefore, if the person has a Residence Permit as an Investor and is interested in working, they can do so directly without the need to have a work permit.


Once the Residence Authorization bas been renewed as an investor. What is the validity of my new card?

Once the residence card has been renewed, the Large Companies and Strategic Groups Unit (UGE-CE) will grant an authorization valid for five years.


Can I leave Spain with my Golden Visa?

Just like any residence card you can leave and enter Spain as many times you want, as long as the residence card and passport are valid. In addition, the renewal of this card does not require effective residence in Spain. What does effective residence in Spain mean? To renew any residence card in Spain, it is necessary not to leave the national territory for a long period of time. This time of absence in Spain varies depending on the card holder.


On the other hand, with the Residence as an Investor, it is not necessary to stay a certain number of days in Spain to renew it.
